Artist Focus - Cayce Zavaglia - Portrait and Process
Interesting video on artist working with thread. I much prefer the back of her thread paintings to the front!

Assignment 1 -Still Life complete
This is the second completed piece in this assignment. As I mentioned before, this work is based on a drawer of machine parts etc from a disused shirt factory. The composition has strong areas of interest and the watercolour support has added a broken textural surface. Technically, it works, but suffers from a lack of an evident contextual reference - although I would contend that there are subconscious traces of Diego Rivera's mural painting in there.

The subject matter itself alludes to the demise of shirt making in Derry and it's once premier role in the world of garment manufacture.

Alice Kettle is an embroiderer who originally trained as a painter. Her figurative works particularly demonstrate this.

Still Life - Assignment 1
Rather than setting up a still life for this assignment, I chose a group of objects that had come together by accident. These objects had been thrown together in a large box in a local shirt factory. I liked the random composition of the objects that, despite the fact that the arrangement was by chance, still managed to have balance. This work is in a range of media - pencil, pen and inktense pencil on rough watercolour paper.

Turner Prize - Derry-Londonderry
The Turner Prize is being exhibited outside England for the first time this year - in Derry/Londonderry - UK City of Culture 2013, which just happens to be my home town.
I visited it a couple of weeks ago and saw the work of 3 of the artists - the queques for Laure Prouvost's installation were very long so I have to go back and see that - she was announced as the winner on Monday night.
The four nominees were - David Shrigley, Tino Seghal, Laure Prouvost and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

Fabric as Material and Concept in Art
I've been considering why I have such an affinity with fabric as a material.
My recent experiments in drawing with thread have led me to this book which is actually a very large exhibition catalogue.
